An incremental person record that distinguishes transmitted tradition, documentary evidence, and research or bibliography.
A — Transmitted tradition
The current Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den transmitted lineage places 上野喜三右衛門景末 after 上野左右馬助景用 and before 上野喜三右衛門景根. This is an order preserved within the tradition; it does not by itself establish parentage, household succession, direct transmission, or a teacher–student relationship.
The site uses 上野喜三右衛門景末 as the canonical display because it is the name in the current transmitted lineage. The reviewed published transcription and research diagram do not yet directly confirm the exact form 景末; they show 景本 in the corresponding position. The canonical display does not resolve that difference.
A / E — Current transmitted lineage and site comparison
In the current Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den transmitted lineage, 上野喜三右衛門景末 appears between 上野左右馬助景用 and 上野喜三右衛門景根. The title of this article preserves that current transmitted form.
A position in the transmission and direct attestation of the same written name in a historical document are different questions. This article does not automatically merge the transmitted 景末, the published or research form 景本, and the unresolved 夢醒居士 into one person.
A / F — Transmitted name and unverified matters
景末 forms part of the person's name in the current transmitted lineage preserved by this site. 上野喜三右衛門景末 therefore remains the canonical display name at this stage.
The relevant pages and published transcription visually reviewed in 新陰流（疋田伝）の研究 did not provide a direct documentary occurrence of 景末 as this person's name. The transmitted form is therefore not described as a historically established original reading or as a known alternate name of 景本.
C / D — Published transcription and modern research
On p. 11 of 新陰流（疋田伝）の研究, a lineage diagram presented with reference to 肥後武道史 places 上野喜三右衛門（景本） after 上野左右馬助（景用） and before 上野喜三右衛門（景根）. This is a reconstruction published in modern research.
In a separate evidence layer, the typeset Hayashi-family transcription on p. 89 lists 藤原朝臣景本／上野喜三右衛門 after 藤原朝臣景用／上野左馬佐 and before 藤原景根／上野喜三右衛門. The agreement between the diagram and transcription is significant, but the underlying document's characters, column grouping, and editorial transcription have not been independently verified.
A / C / D / E — Tradition, transcription, research, and comparison
The present transmitted lineage preserves 景末, while the reviewed published transcription and research diagram show 景本 in the corresponding position.
It has not been established whether 景末 and 景本 are different written forms for the same person, alternate names, or different people in the lineage. The site records transmitted and source-specific forms in parallel instead of automatically replacing a transmitted name with a candidate found in another evidence layer.
C / E / F — Published transcription, comparison, and unresolved identity
The same transcription on p. 89 places the name 夢醒居士 between the 景本 name group and the 景根 name group. Placement alone does not establish 夢醒居士 as a gō or alternate name of 景本 or 景末, nor does it establish a separate person.
The 上野-family identity audit classifies the association as UNRESOLVED. This record does not register 夢醒 or 夢醒居士 as an alias and does not describe 景末 as 夢醒 or 景本 as later becoming 夢醒.
A / B / C / E — Tradition, later notes, transcription, and comparison
The current lineage establishes only the displayed order: 上野喜三右衛門景末 follows 上野左右馬助景用 and is followed by 上野喜三右衛門景根. It does not make 景末 a son or direct student of 景用, the father of 景根, or a numbered second head.
The published transmission-name sequence likewise places 景本 between 景用 and 景根. Separately, the project extract of 上野景根先生講釈聞書 in 肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 presents 上野喜三右衛門藤原朝臣景根 as 上野左右馬佐より三代目. This records a generational understanding in a later copy, not a complete genealogy establishing a grandson, third household head, or third transmission holder.
The next current-lineage entry is 上野喜三右衛門景根. The reviewed published and transcribed material likewise pairs 喜三右衛門 with 景根, but this matching written form does not by itself establish personal relationships, generation, or the path of transmission.
B / C / E — Later material, published transcription, and site review
OCR of p. 39 of 新陰流（疋田伝）の研究 returned 藤原朝臣景末, but visual inspection of the published page shows 藤原朝臣景兼. This passage cannot be used as an occurrence of 景末. OCR was used only to locate pages; identity-critical readings were checked against the page image.
The currently human-confirmed portion of the lineage material associated with Fukuoka City Museum covers only the first four names, from 愛洲移香 through 疋田栖雲斎. The later 上野 section has not been checked, so that record is not used as documentary proof for person-06.
The available working transcription of 廻国記 does not contain 景末, 景本, 景根, 喜三右衛門, or 客三右衛門 for this identity problem. Its Keichō 6 chronology is not used to infer person-06 or direct transmission from 疋田豊五郎.
B / C / D — Later documents, published material, and research
肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 is a modern compilation and transcription of multiple Higo Shinkage-ryu materials of differing provenance, not one Edo-period autograph manuscript. Its compiler cautions that punctuation, okurigana, supplementation, and interpretation may contain errors; the individual originals, copy relations, authors, and dates have not been independently verified.
Within 新陰流（疋田伝）の研究, the research diagram on p. 11 and the published transcription on p. 89 are used as different evidence layers. The p. 11 diagram is presented with reference to 肥後武道史, but the project has not directly reviewed the relevant pages or sources of 肥後武道史 itself.
The research diagram later branches from 景根 toward the Hayashi and Yokota, Wada, and Tonami and Hayami lines. Those later branches are not projected backward to claim that 景末 founded or taught a branch, held a domain instructional post, or occupied a particular household office.
F — Unverified
An original source directly writing 景末; evidence identifying or distinguishing 景末 and 景本; an authoritative 上野 genealogy; the original Hayashi-family document; the identity of 夢醒居士; and the 喜三右衛門／客三右衛門 discrepancy remain unverified.
The complete 上野景根先生講釈聞書 and its Taishō 4 copying colophon, the relevant pages of 肥後武道史, the 上野 records in the Eisei Bunko 肥後藩先祖附, the Bunka 14 天狗書秘伝の巻, and the later portion of the Fukuoka City Museum material also require direct review.
No birth or death year, birthplace, parents, child, kinship with 景用 or 景根, direct teacher–student or transmission relation, generation number, office, holdings, residence, military service, grave, domain appointment, or branch-founder status has been added to the canonical person data.
Research status
This research-in-progress article follows the 上野-family identity audit and keeps A the current transmitted lineage, B later documents and lecture notes, C published reproductions and transcriptions, D modern research, E the site's comparison, and F unverified matters distinct. It does not merge the canonical transmitted 景末 with the source-specific 景本, 夢醒居士, or 景根.

Pages 11, 39, and 89 visually reviewed · evidence layers kept distinct
Published Hikita-related and later transmission materials were reviewed. For Bungorō's biography, the statements on p. 1 concerning an approximate Tenbun 4 birth, Kaga, parentage, and 景兼, and the 350-koku statement on p. 10 were checked in page images; no claim-specific primary-source citation was identified on those pages. For the 上野 identity audit, the lineage diagram on p. 11 attributed to 肥後武道史, the OCR false positive on p. 39, and the typeset Hayashi-family transcription on p. 89 were checked visually and kept in separate evidence layers. The original sources' provenance, authorship, dates, and transcription decisions have not been independently verified.
Comparative sections reviewed · evidence layers kept distinct
A modern compilation and transcription of multiple Higo Shinkage-ryu sources, including materials described as 鈴鹿家文書, holdings of the International Budo University, documents marked 細川侯蔵 / 細川候蔵, and later copies or transcriptions. Relevant 上野-line and technical sections were reviewed. The compiler cautions that punctuation, okurigana, supplementation, and interpretation may contain errors; the site has not independently authenticated the originals, provenance, texts, or autograph status.
