A / B — Transmitted lineage and later documents
上野左右馬助景用
The current Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den lineage places 上野左右馬助景用 between 疋田栖雲斎 and 上野喜三右衛門景末. Later Higo transmission documents look back to 左右馬助 as a prior authority, making this figure pivotal to the transition from Hikita transmission to the later 上野-family and Higo traditions.
Importance within a transmitted lineage is not identical to fact established by documents written in 景用's own time. This article separates current tradition, later transmission documents and lecture notes, modern reproductions and scholarship, and the site's comparison.
A / D / F — Tradition, scholarship, and comparison
Relationship with 疋田豊五郎
The current transmitted lineage continues from 疋田栖雲斎 to 上野左右馬助景用. Modern research describes 疋田豊五郎 as transmitting the tradition to his senior disciple 上野左右馬助景用, who then succeeded as a Shinkage-ryu instructor within the Hosokawa domain.
This is presented as a modern reconstruction in works such as 新陰流(疋田伝)の研究. The project has not independently examined a primary source establishing the date, place, ceremony, or content of transmission from 疋田豊五郎 to 景用.
B / C — Later documents and published transcription
先師左右馬助以来
A later Higo document included in 肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 positions its transmission of 新陰之流兵法 and related 口訣 volumes as descending from 先師左右馬助以来. This is important evidence that later transmitters understood their own tradition as continuing from 左右馬助.
It is not a document independently established as a contemporary autograph by 景用. The relationship between 先師左右馬助 and the name forms in each source, as well as the provenance and text of the originals and copies, remains to be verified.
B / C — Later transmitted material and reproduction
The Keichō 6 景用-related record
The compilation includes a memorandum concerning wooden-sword dimensions that transmits the date and signature 慶長六年八月日 左右馬之助. What is currently established here is that the compilation reproduces or transcribes material carrying that wording.
Because the original location, provenance, physical document, handwriting, and copy lineage have not been independently examined, the article does not call it an extant autograph by 景用. Nor is the memorandum treated as the same event as transmission from 疋田豊五郎.
D / E — Scholarship and historical context
Transmission within the Hosokawa house
Modern research describes 上野左右馬助景用 as succeeding 疋田豊五郎 and the 上野 family as maintaining the Hikita line within the Hosokawa house. 上野新陰流 also appears as a later research or transmission label.
These descriptions and terms do not replace the site's canonical tradition name. Primary Hosokawa personnel records confirming 景用's office, rank, holdings, or residence have not yet been reviewed.
D / E / F — Scholarship, historical context, and comparison
Development in Higo
Modern research places the 上野 transmission within the Hosokawa house before the house's move to Higo in Kan'ei 9 (1632), and describes its continuation after that move. This differs from a simplified claim that 疋田豊五郎 personally brought Shinkage-ryu to Kumamoto.
The project has not directly examined domain records establishing the transmission's continuity through the 1632 transfer. 景用 is not presented as the founder of Higo Shinkage-ryu or as the first person to bring the tradition to Kumamoto.
B / D — Later material and scholarship
The 上野 family and later instructor houses
新陰流(疋田伝)の研究 and related scholarship describe later instructor houses—including the Hayashi, Yokota, Wada, Hayami, and Tonami houses—as developing from the 上野 transmission. This reconstruction reportedly relies in part on 肥後武道史.
The project has not directly verified the relevant text and sources of 肥後武道史. It does not state that the five houses existed during 景用's lifetime or that he personally taught each of them.
B / C / F — Lecture-note copy, reproduction, and comparison
Transmission after 景用
In 上野景根先生講釈聞書 as included in 肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集, a closing statement presents 上野喜三右衛門藤原朝臣景根 as 上野左右馬佐より三代目. The surviving or reproduced context also includes the later copying statement 大正四年一月書写.
This records generational memory in a later copy, not a complete genealogy that identifies the intermediate generation. Person-06 examines, source layer by source layer, the unresolved differences among the current lineage's 上野喜三右衛門景末 and 上野喜三右衛門景根 and the names or generations in later documents, genealogies, and scholarship.
B / C / F — Later documents, reproductions, and comparison
Names such as 猿飛, 三学, and 位詰
Later 上野-line and Higo documents preserve names also found in material associated with 疋田豊五郎, including 猿飛, 三学 / 参学, 位詰, 外物謀略, 八種の目着, 先持・後拍子, and 口訣. This is evidence for studying continuity in terminology and catalogue names.
Continuity of names does not prove that 景用 authored every later document, transmitted every item in the same arrangement, or preserved identical bodily movements to the present. The Hikita-related and current-transmission name remains 猿飛 and is not normalized to 燕飛.
B / D / F — Text, scholarship, and comparison
Chronological contact with 廻国記
The working text of 廻国記 records 疋田豊五郎 returning to 豊前 on the fifteenth day of the second month of Keichō 6 (1601). Separately, 肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 includes the wooden-sword memorandum carrying an eighth-month Keichō 6 date and the name 左右馬之助.
The currently available 廻国記 text does not name 上野左右馬助景用. Chronological proximity does not establish an immediate meeting, instruction, transmission, or succession, and the two records are not treated as documenting the same transmission event.
D / G — Later accounts and unresolved questions
Biographical accounts and chronological problems
Later materials contain biographical claims connecting 景用 with fighting at Gifu and the Shimabara Rebellion, but the age and date calculations contain tensions and require examination of the underlying primary records.
No birth or death year, exact age, father, wound, military service, residence, office, rank, or holdings have been added to the canonical person data. The article does not fill the gaps to create a continuous life story.
B / C / D — Documents, reproductions, and compilation
Nature and limits of the source compilation
肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 is a modern compilation and transcription of multiple Higo Shinkage-ryu sources, not a single Edo-period autograph manuscript. It brings together materials described as 鈴鹿家文書, International Budo University holdings, documents marked 細川侯蔵 / 細川候蔵, and later copies or transcriptions.
The compiler cautions that punctuation, okurigana, supplementation, and interpretation may contain errors. The published material remains valuable transmission evidence, but the project has not independently authenticated each original, copy relationship, author, date, or character reading.
D / E — Research, bibliography, and context
Research and bibliography
新陰流(疋田伝)の研究 is used as modern scholarship describing transmission from 疋田豊五郎 to 上野左右馬助景用, instruction within the Hosokawa house, and the later 上野-family and instructor-house traditions. 肥後細川藩―新陰之流伝書集 is used to examine reproduced later documents, lecture notes, and copying statements.
肥後武道史 is currently known as an underlying source cited by the former publication, not as a work directly reviewed by this project. Modern research statements are not automatically converted into contemporary primary-source facts.
G — Unverified
Unverified matters
The locations, provenance, texts, and autograph status of 景用-related originals; the original/copy relationship of the Keichō 6 memorandum; direct transmission from 疋田豊五郎; Hosokawa status and duties; and continuity through the 1632 transfer remain unverified.
Source-by-source mapping of 上野左馬佐, 左右馬助, and 藤原朝臣景用; the people and generations represented by 景末 and 景根; the Gifu and Shimabara accounts; development into five later houses; and technical comparison across documents also remain open research questions.
