- The written form 愛洲小七郎 and the four-name sequence
The reviewed names come from the lineage section of 新陰流形組絵図 held by Fukuoka City Museum.
Historical person record
An incremental person record that distinguishes transmitted tradition, documentary evidence, and research or bibliography.
A — Transmitted tradition
In the lineage transmitted within Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den, 愛洲小七郎 is positioned between 愛洲移香 and 上泉武蔵守.
The portion currently confirmed in the lineage material held by Fukuoka City Museum also records the names in the order 愛洲移香, 愛洲小七郎, 上泉武蔵守, and 疋田栖雲斎.
This website respects the written form 愛洲小七郎 in that source and uses it as the person’s displayed name.
The lineage shows the position assigned to 愛洲小七郎 in the transmission of Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den.
Names appearing consecutively in a lineage do not by themselves establish biological kinship, teacher–student relationships, or the time and place of transmission.
B — Documentary evidence
The registered lineage source contains the name 愛洲小七郎 at position 2 in its currently human-confirmed transcription. This does not establish the relationships in the sequence as historical fact.
C — Research and bibliography
Later martial-arts histories, biographical dictionaries, and research concerning the Aisu family contain accounts associating 愛洲小七郎 with the name 宗通.
Institutional and library research concerning materials associated with the Hirasawa family also reports that 平澤家伝記 includes sections titled 第一世 久忠傳記 and 第二世 宗通傳記. This is an important lead for examining Aisu and Hirasawa family traditions.
This website has not directly examined the relevant text of 平澤家伝記. Moreover, the Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den lineage source currently registered here reads 愛洲小七郎, not 宗通.
The site therefore does not presently treat 愛洲小七郎 and 宗通 as an unconditional identification; related sources will be assessed as they are examined.
A / C — Tradition and research
Later literature sometimes describes 愛洲小七郎 as a child of 愛洲移香 or as a figure who continued that line.
What the Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den lineage source directly confirms at present is only the transmitted order from 愛洲移香 to 愛洲小七郎.
This source alone does not establish a specific biological relationship or the circumstances of transmission. Hirasawa-family and other materials will be examined directly before transmitted and documentary relationships are assessed further.
A / C — Tradition and research
The transmitted lineage of Shinkage-ryu Hikita-den places 上泉武蔵守 after 愛洲小七郎.
Modern histories of sword and martial traditions also contain accounts that 上泉 learned 陰流 from 愛洲小七郎. Other traditions and scholarly arrangements of 上泉’s acquisition of 陰流 exist as well.
The site therefore does not state as historical fact that 愛洲小七郎 directly taught 上泉武蔵守. It first presents the received lineage, then will organize the sources and research that bear on 上泉’s reception of 陰流.
C — Research questions
Further work will examine whether 愛洲小七郎 can be securely identified with 宗通, the documentary basis for describing him as a child or successor of 愛洲移香, and whether any source supports direct transmission to 上泉武蔵守.
If transmission can be historically demonstrated, its date and location—and the differing accounts of 上泉’s acquisition of 陰流 in Shinkage-ryu and related traditions—will require comparison across sources and scholarship.
